HARMENSZ REMBRANDT

(1606-1669)

Rembrandt
1606 – 1669
A view of Amsterdam
c.1640
Etching
12 x 15.8
P.455

The view depicted appears to be from the bank of the River Y, north-west of Amsterdam. Dr. Jan Six identifies the square tower as the old Stadhuis without the west tower, which was built in 1631-8, thus dating the etching to before 1638. However, Rembrandt would frequently alter subjects for the sake of the composition, so this hypothesis cannot be considered as accurate.
