CAMILLE PISSARO

(1830-1903)

Field and Mill at Osny
1885
Etching, aquatint
15.8 x 23.4
P.471

Pissarro began etching in around 1863. Edgar DEGAS introduced him to new techniques such as aquatint and drypoint and he became an innovative printmaker in order to achieve the effects of the open air within his prints. This can be seen to great effect in Prairie et Moulin where Pissarro incorporated aquatint during the fourth state as illustrated here, to accentuate the shadows.
