Joseph Goupy
was born in Niève, and during the course of his career was widely known and
respected for his copies, generally in pastel or gouache, of Old Master
paintings. He was also a collector and curator. In another British Library
catalogue of the sale of works by 'Joseph Goupy esq' (sale advertised as 23
March 1765), he is recorded as 'cabinet painter to his late Royal Highness,
Frederick Prince of Wales'. He also painted sets for productions at the Royal
Academy of Music, including operas for Handel. Their friendship ended after the
publication of the True Representation and Character of the Charming Brute,
1730, in which Goupy portrayed the composer as a bewigged hog playing the
organ.
Hiero (or
Hieron) 306 - 215 BC is described by Plutarch as a close relation of Archimedes,
from whom Hiero sought frequent advice on military matters.
