Since Indian Independence, Benares has been called Varanasi.

William Daniell, aged only fifteen, accompanied his uncle Thomas (1749-1840) first to China and then to India. They reached Calcutta in 1786 and made the first of their long tours throughout India 1788-91. The main result of their travels was Oriental Scenery, published in parts 1795-1808. It contained 144 plates in colour and cost subscribers £210. Although Thomas is accorded foremost place as draughtsman, William was by then a highly proficient engraver in aquatint.
