Sydney Cockerell first met Ruskin in 1887. They soon became friends and Cockerell was invited to stay at Brentwood. He was later director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, 1908-37, and was knighted in 1934. Talloires is on the eastern shore of the Lake of Annecy, dominated by the imposing Rochers de Lanfon. This was a part of France that Ruskin visited several times. EJ/JM PROVENANCE: Given to Sir Sydney Cockerell (1867-1962) by Joan Severn from Brentwood after Ruskin’s death; sale Sotheby’s (property of the late Sir Sydney Cockerell), 14 November 1962, no.70; purchased by Thos. Agnew & Sons Ltd on behalf of Gallery. Notes: compiler’s question marks for inscription on reverse. copyright © Trustees of Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford.
