This coast scene, with its long vista of drying sand as the tide goes out, may reflect the influence of shore scenes by BONINGTON, who had died in 1828. Cox would have been familiar with his work following the artist’s studio sale in 1829. In 1829 Cox paid his first visit to Paris calling on FRANCIA, Bonington’s teacher, in Calais and then sketching at Boulogne, which he may have revisited on his final trip to France in 1832.
