Museum and Art Gallery Get Out and About

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) award, together with partnership funding from Bedford Borough Council, the Bedford Charity (The Harpur Trust), the Trustees of the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Lousada Plc, will enable the Museum and Art Gallery to work with a range of communities, engaging them in events and creative activities and attracting new visitors for the future.

The funding comes at an exciting time for Bedford Borough Council's Museum Service, contributing to the programme of phased refurbishment of its facilities. The project will help to ensure that Bedford's communities can continue to access their local heritage through a wide-ranging outreach programme that engages people with the Museum and Gallery's collections, consults them over development plans and involves them in new displays and interpretation. The grant will help fund new staff, artists and project workers to work within the community, especially with those who have had little experience at the Museum and Gallery.

One focus of the project will be to collect the stories of local people through oral history recordings and creative projects so that the new displays reflect the heritage of Bedford's diverse communities and the more recent history of the area.
