The Gallery holds a
significant collection of glass much of which is on permanent display. With
the exception of a few pieces of Roman and Egyptian glass, the earliest
pieces in the collection are Venetian. The Gallery also holds an important
collection of glass from the reigns of William and Mary and Queen Anne.
These displays help to illustrate the development of English lead glass from
complicated Venetian patterns for which it is not well suited to simpler and
more fitting native designs. The Collection also holds pieces up to
the present with fine examples by the Whitefriars Factory and Sam Herman. |
