| There are exceptions, but during the Victorians era and particularly in the 40`s and 50`s the Victorians wanted their furniture to reflect a strong character without any sense of the past. This style was called the naturalistic style. The search for comfort in furniture was extremely popular and for chairs this was achieved by putting upholstery on the framework. Also, the shape of the chair was beginning to be designed to suit the shape of the body. Chair makers were beginning to paint or grain wood to make it imitate rarer woods rosewood which was popular in the Victorian era and was often used without carving of gilding. ` The prayer chair’s name could reflects the revival of Catholicism and the building of church during this time. |
