Satinwood Writing Table

Satinwood, c.1870, height 76.2 cm, depth 57.2 cm, width 119.4 cm.

This kidney shaped writing table was manufactured by the upholsterers Johnstone and Jeanes.  Indeed the table is stamped on the top of the front drawer in the frieze with their mark and their Bond Street address.  Johnson and Jeanes are listed as manufacturers to HRH Prince of Wales.  The designer of this table, however, is unknown.

The table has gilt bronze beading and a red leather top with a gilt stamped foliate border.   It is a commercial table in the style of Louis XVI and the inlaid geometric decoration is reminiscent of the Gothic style.
