Chinese Low Table 18th or 19th century. L 53.4 x W 32.1 x H 14 cm. This Chinese low table is most likely to be made of a mixture of Pterocarpus and Dalbergia woods, which are rosewoods. Sir John Addis, a diplomat in China and the British ambassador to Peking, donated it to the gallery. The table is scroll-like with incurving legs and scrolled feet. It is very simple in design. These low tables were used on k'dangs which are low platforms upon which one could sit to read or write - they are referred to as k'dang tables. The table can also be used across the knees when sitting down to write. The table has a piece of paper attached to it inscribed with '15' and a Chinese character. This is glued under the top. It also has a cardboard disk with Chinese characters on both sides attached to one of the struts. |
