Purse enclosed Muff, covered in moleskin fur, muff lined with brown satin and edged with same satin in a ruffle. Metal frame fastening with a sliding catch, initial ‘M.S.’ on frame, keyhole (no key) short carry handle covered in fur. Fashionable from the 1870’s through the early 1900’s, muff
handbags were worn to match a full stole often reaching from shoulder to
hemline. Muffs lined in satin could reach huge sizes, some as large as two feet
square. The type and quality of fur depended on the wearer’s taste and finances.
Not all muffs were fur, as the smaller and more feminine ones often made of
velvet, silks, or even ostrich feathers . Muff-purses or satchels were very
popular and practical. |
