Jacket bodices became popular in the 1870’s marking a move towards practicality and the change in women’s roles, Waists were a little higher than the natural line and served to emphasise the bustle at the back of the skirt whilst still retaining a little fullness at the front. This dress has a button at the back to catch up the train and make walking easier, illustrating the trend towards practicality This is a wedding dress. White was not the predominant colour for wedding dresses until after the First World War, although its popularity was increasing throughout the 19th Century. Dresses worn for weddings were reused as evening or every day wear and worn only once as they are today.
