| Höchst was founded by the porcelain painter A.F. von Löwenfinck in 1746. It first produced 'Faience' wares till 1758.They were painted in bright enamel colours for mainly useful wares, such as large tureens, or sauceboats often in the form of animals such as pug-dogs or turkeys. The factory also produced high quality painted dishes, some by Johannes Zeschinger (b.1723) and genre pieces after prints by Chodowiecki. In 1749 the factory was taken over by J.C. Göltz and J.F. Clarus and a year later they began to produce porcelain. Their tableware's were originally in a gentle, Rococo form which developed to a more classical style in 1765 and a robust style in the 1780`s. However, Höchst is mostly known for its statuettes and its peak period was with the Chief modeller from 1767-79, J.P Melchior. He produced numerous delicate, sentimental, figures and many biscuit portrait relief's. After his departure in 1779 the factory mainly concentrated on its tableware's until it closed in 1796. | |
