This bronze letterbox,
measuring 15cm high by 4cm wide (6 ⅛” x 1 ¾ “) is a contemporary replica of
the lost original, designed by Burges for his own use at Tower House in
c.1875. It was modelled by Thomas Nicholls and cast and chased by Barkentin.
As is common
in Burges’s work, the image on the letterbox makes a comical allusion to its
function. It depicts Mercury, the God of Speed, carrying a bundle of papers
or letters tucked under his left arm, with a bag hanging from the same arm.
The index finger of his right hand is raised to his lips, suggesting thought
or puzzlement. Above the figure is incised a shield, displaying a heart
surrounded by three fleurs-de-lys. |
