The little building captured in the
Fisher watercolour above was the Sessions House, built in 1753, which stood
where Shire Hall stands today, on the south side of Saint Paul's Square.
This one small building has had many functions during its lifetime, serving as:
Sessions House, County Court, Town Hall, temporary classroom space, and as a
place of worship for the congregation of the
Bunyan Meeting
while they waited for their own building to be rebuilt. The demolition of
the Sessions House took place in the 1870s, when room was made for the much
bigger Shire Hall designed by Alfred Waterhouse and completed in 1879. Today
Shire Hall houses the Magistrate's Court. |
