The  pictures above show the east and west extremities of Bedford Embankment, with newly laid paths and regimented lines of trees. The landscaping apparent here is absent from the 1879 Mill Meadow view of  a relatively untamed river bank, which gave a rustic charm to this stretch of the Ouse until  urbanisation at the end of the nineteenth century.
