Born in London, the son of a weaver, Pyne became a painter, writer, and editor. In the 1780s he studied watercolour painting under Henry Pars and exhibited at the Royal Academy soon after. His paintings specialised in rural life with particular attention to figures and animals. The picture of Bedford Pig Market reveals Pyne's eye for costume, a subject which he was commissioned to write on and illustrate for The Costume Of Great Britain. A founder member of the Society of Painters in Watercolour, Pyne later severed his connection with the group and, despite becoming an accomplished painter and receiving numerous commissions, died in poverty in 1843. |
