An amateur artist, Matthiason wrote and illustrated Bedford and its Environs in 1831. He was a progressive thinker, expressing support for the education of women and opposition to the execution of prisoners. He was Mathematics teacher at Bedford New School from around 1821, until he was sacked for a deficiency in earnestness and zeal. He attempted to sue his employers for wrongful dismissal, but lost the case and was crippled by his legal costs. Unable to pay, Matthiason was imprisoned in Bedford Gaol. |
