John Wing was a builder, mason and architect, elected Mayor of Bedford in 1793, 1808 and 1817. As well as being responsible for masonry work at Woburn Abbey (1789-92), he built Bedford Gaol (1801), the first Infirmary, the Lunatic Asylum, and Bedford Bridge (1811-13). His son, James Tacy Wing, with Thomas Jobson Jackson, was architect of the new Bunyan Meeting of 1850, and builder of the Bedford New Schools to the designs of Edward Blore.
