The red brick building captured in Thomas Fisher's watercolour had existed on the site since 1774. It was built as the Independent Meeting House, for people who had broken away from the Bunyan Meeting over a dispute concerning the baptismal ceremony. 1849 saw the completion of alterations to the building, which included a new facade and enlargement of the structure to cope with a growing congregation. The chapel ended its ecclesiastical life in 1971, was gutted by fire in 1985 and is now the home of The Mission, a popular night spot. |
