George Gearey 1868-1952

 

 

Born in the Bedfordshire village of Stagsden, Gearey spent his childhood in Newport Pagnell before moving to Bedford in 1892. He designed and made his first camera as a boy and pursued his interest throughout life, taking, copying and collecting photographs around Bedford. He worked as sign writer, house decorator and was skilled in engraving and stained glass work. He was dedicated to recording a pictorial history of Bedford and was a member of the Bedford Natural History and Archaeology Society and Bedford Camera Club. All the pictures featured on the Bricks & Water website come from the Gearey Collection which is now held at the County records Office, County Hall, Bedford.
