Although very similar in appearance the two spires pictured above are different. The oil by Jobson Jackson depicts the "new" spire on St Paul's Church , which had been rebuilt in 1868. The buildings on the right of the early photograph, and  absent from the oil painting, belonged to Jarvis's brewery (one of more than twenty breweries which have existed in the town) and were demolished in 1884. The north bank of this section of the river is now dominated by municipal buildings.
